Welcome to CoreRageous Dance & Movement dance programs. At our studio everyone loves to DANCE and MOVE! We believe dance provides improved coordination, flexibility, self esteem and mind-body awareness. We are pleased you have selected our studio for your dance endeavors.

Our studio offers a variety of dance classes for students, ages 3 to adults. Classes include Pre-School Combination, Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Lyrical, Street Jazz and Ballroom dancing. Each class is organized to offer every student with a fun filled atmosphere with qualified and caring instructors. Instruction is tailored to the skill level and experience of the class members. Although students are placed in classes according to age, we recognize students advance at different paces. We will add additional classes as needed to accommodate the needs of students with different skill levels. If you do not see a class that fits your needs or your child please discuss with the artistic director Adrienne Rieken. Each class typically consists of 55 minutes of instruction and five minute for optional questions and comments. This allows for students to switch from class to class, an instructor to take a quick break and for the parents to speak to an instructor.

If a problem needs to be discussed in length please feel free to call the studio and leave a message for an instructor to call you.

NOTE: Classes are subject to cancellation due to insufficient enrollment.

Forms of Dance

Ballet
Ballet is a form of dance that came to life in the 1400’s in Renaissance Italy.  At this time ballet was used to entertain the courts; such people as kings, queens and spectators between meals and during meals.  As time went on ballet was brought to France at the time of Catherine de Medici and became a great favorite with King Louis XIV who cast himself in the leading roles of elaborately costumed court spectaculars. Ballet has since spread to all the corners of the world reaching new heights of perfection in Russia and now worldwide. You can view professional ballet companies on every continent.  Ballet is different from any other form of dance because it has particular rules such as how a dancer must dress/wear their hair, stand and or even move.  Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms consisting of barre, center floor work, and traveling movement across the floor.  It helps teach dancers how to maintain good body alignment both to prevent injury and to produce a more pleasing and graceful look to their movement.  Ballet pays meticulous attention to technical detail and all dancers can benefit from ballet technique.

Tap
It is hard to really say when tap dance really began.  Some like to say tap dance really began in the 18th century with Africans creating rhythm by brushing and shuffling their feet over surfaces.  Over the century many people tried to duplicate the movement but ended up with their own variation known as clogging steps known as “buck and wing”.  Over time this collaboration of steps has grown to what we know as tap dancing today.  Tap dance is known to make rhythmic patterns on the floor almost like a Morse code.  A dancer learns to keep a beat!

Jazz
Jazz is an exciting and ever evolving dance form full of rhythm, syncopation, passion and life.  Steeped in the rhythm of jazz music, a true American art form, jazz dance brings energy and life to all those who dance it.   Classes explore body isolations of the head, shoulders, ribcage, feet and arms and encourage individual expression and the development of personal style. Jazz can be powerful and percussive or expressive and lyrical.  Ever evolving, jazz dance is taught with the music of today together with the classical jazz of yesterday.

Lyrical
Lyrical is a modern dance form that combines ballet, jazz and modern.  Lyrical is also known as a contemporary dance.  It combines the technique and rules of ballet, the rhythm of jazz, and the emotion of modern.  This form of dance teaches dancers how to tell a story by doing beautiful continuous flowing movement and by interrupting movement through a song’s lyrics.  Lyrical allows a dancer to create “emotion” while dancing.

Street Jazz
Street Jazz is a high-energy, choreography-based form of dance combining hip-hop, jazz, and a touch of lyrical dance styles.  Typically this class’s music consists of regular everyday radio listening music with a mix of tasteful hip-hop music.

Beginning with the Spring 2008 Session, all CoreRageous Dance & Movement hip-hop dance classes will transition to street jazz.

Ballroom Dance
Ballroom dance refers collectively to a set of partner dances that originated in the Western world.

Types of ballroom dance include:

  • International Standard: Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, and Quickstep

Attendance & Make-Up Classes
Students will benefit most from classes if their attendance is consistent. Making up missed classes is permitted in the same age group in each dance discipline if space is available. Please check with the studio in advance to verify there is space. No refunds or credits will be given after the first class meeting for missed classes for any reasons except for emergencies, severe illness, or injury. Missed classes must be made-up within two (2) weeks of the absence if space is available. Missed classes may not be applied to unpaid or overdue tuition.

Dance Dress and Apparel
CoreRageous Dance & Movement endeavors to present the professional image of a quality educational institution. Therefore, attire for each class is specified and required for uniformity and, in some case, safety. This will help to maximize your and or your child's experience with us. If in doubt, concerning uniform please ask prior to purchasing.

Students should wear the attire assigned to each class and long hair must be pulled away from the face and neck. We have a structured uniform in ballet but in other styles we feel bright colors and fun attire can enhance a student, however, we ask that midriff's be covered. At any time, we reserve the right to dismiss a student due to improper attire.

NOTE: Dance shoes should be worn indoors only!

Dance Recitals
As CoreRageous Dance & Movement begins to grow we will have an annual recital in June. All students are invited and encouraged to participate in our annual dance recital (date/location to be announced). The cost for the recital is not included in tuition and students will be required to buy their costume or costumes. Depending on the class, costumes vary in cost from approximately $40.00 to $90.00 per costume. A costume deposit of $50.00 is required with November's tuition and the balance is due with March's tuition.

Families pay a $40 recital fee per student. Student's accounts must be in good standing before they perform in the recital. Dance recital rehearsals are mandatory for students participating in the performance. Rehearsals are long and tedious so be prepared.

Video Taping During Recitals
Video taping during the annual recital is not allowed. We will be taping the recital using professional equipment and copies will be available for purchase. Still pictures will be permitted, however, flashes will not be allowed due to safety reasons. Watch for more details as the performance draws near.

Photographs for Recital
Individual and group photographs will be available for purchase if desired. It is important that all dancers be a part of the group picture because the pictures maybe posted throughout the studio or on the website. Watch for more details as the recital draws near.
